PEOPLES’ PARTICIPATION (Reason's, OBJECTIVES, TECHNIQUES)


PEOPLES’ PARTICIPATION: WHY?

·    Peoples affected by environmental impacts may have an appreciation or  better understanding of those impacts (e.g. local knowledge) not shared by experts or specialists
·    Involving people in making a decision usually encourages them to support it which leads to successful implementation and
·     The right to participate in decisions, which affect people, is a basic human right.

 PEOPLE’S PARTICIPATION: OBJECTIVES

·        To ensure development relevant to the local people
·        To inform and educate the affected citizen about the proposed development action
·        To provide local people a decision making in the development process
·   To ensure early detection of possible social conflicts arising from intervention
·    To develop a sense of belonging among local people and enable them to participate in implementation as well as operation and maintenance phase which enhance long term sustainability

·        Public hearing--- formal and highly structured
·        Public meetings--- less formalized
·        Informal small group meeting
·        Information and co-ordination seminars
·        Operating field offices
·        Local community visits
·        Field trip and site visits- by professionals
·        Public display and model demonstrations
·        Workshops
